Why you'll love the Pompidou Center

Most people who see the Pompidou Center aren’t impartial: they either love it or they hate it. Some people say the building itself is modern art; others say it’s horrific and looks like it was built inside out. Whether you agree or not, this building is sure to inspire some sort of feeling from you!

With its pipes on the outside, this new building holds some of the best, and most varied art exhibitions in Paris. From photography to cartoons, and with over seven temporary exhibitions (changing relatively often: every two to four months), and its two permanent exhibitions, you will surely find something interesting to see.

Plus, this monument is open late (9:50pm), which makes it a perfect place to go after the rest has closed.

In 1969 the President of France, Georges Pompidou, decided to build a structure to bring art and culture to the common man. When it was first opened in 1977, this “futuristic” building created huge scandal because of its striking contrast to the area.

Take Metro 1 or 11 to stop HOTEL DE VILLE and use exit [3] rue de la Coutellerie (even though a different exit will be marked). Once out of the Metro station, go straight and turn right onto Rue Saint Martin. Then just go straight!

The building itself is open every day from 11am to 10pm, (Closed Tuesdays and May 1)

Museum and exhibitions are open from 11am to 9pm. (Closed Tuesdays)

No ticket sales after 8pm, halls close at 8.50pm

Museum and exhibition tickets are 10€ for adults, 8€ for those between 18-25, and free for those under 18 years old.

To give you a glimpse, the Pompidou Center, with it’s “exo-skeletal” architecture is color coordinated: the air conditioning ducts are painted in blue, the water pipes are green, and the electricity lines are yellow. All this, is proudly showcased on the outside of the building!

Although the architecture of the building is still very controversial, there were many more visitors than expected, so in 1999, the Pompidou Center had to be renovated. Today, like it or hate it, the Pompidou Center is at least worth a peak.
